Choosing Her Perfect Engagement Ring

January 26, 2021

Valentine’s Day is fast approaching, and it’s one of the most popular days of the year to get engaged. However, choosing a ring can be difficult, especially if you’re unsure of what you’re looking for. Luckily, we are here to help with a simplified guide on how to begin your search for the perfect ring!

Choosing a beautiful ring that is uniquely hers and that you think she would love is one of the most important aspects of proposing. To start, begin to pay attention to the type of jewelry she usually wears. What color is it? Gold, rose gold, or silver? This is a good starting point to deciding what kind of ring she may like. For a silver look, opt for white gold or platinum. White gold or platinum is the most popular choice currently, but you can’t go wrong with classic yellow gold. Rose gold is a more unique choice and is very beautiful, but check and see if she wears any other jewelry this color before deciding on something you are not sure would match her other jewelry.

Diamonds come in many different shapes, however round, pear, oval, princess, emerald, and marquise cuts are the most well known. Choosing a shape she would like is a great next step in finding the perfect ring for her. Some popular diamond cuts currently include oval, pear, and the classic round cut, but don’t feel pressured to go with what is currently trending. After all, she will have this for the rest of her life! Below are some different diamond shapes to take into consideration.

Three stone rings, symbolizing past, present, and future are making a comeback as well which is a great way to mix different diamond cuts together in the same ring.

If your bride likes more unique styles, mixing gemstones into a three-stone ring or into the band is a great way to add an interesting pop of color.

Also opting for a gemstone engagement ring, such as the blue sapphire ring shown below, could be a perfect way to make her ring even more dramatic and unique.

After choosing the shape of stone you think she would love, next is familiarizing yourself with the 4C’s of diamonds!

Let’s start by going over diamond cut since it is the most important of the 4C’s. To have the most sparkle, you want a well-cut diamond. At Ream Jewelers, all of our diamonds are well-cut. This means our stones are symmetrical and sparkle brilliantly.

Color is the next factor to take into consideration when choosing a ring. Color occurs naturally within a diamond and ranges from colored to colorless.

The more colorless the diamond, the rarer it is considered, however naturally occurring fancy color diamonds are considered even more rare than colorless. Some examples are shown below.

Clarity is the next of the 4C’s and refers to the number of microscopic inclusions found within a stone. After being inspected for these inclusions, diamonds are then assigned a clarity grade. Inclusions occur naturally in diamonds and are a large factor that influences the diamond’s rarity. Refer to the chart below for clarity grades.

Carat is the unit of measurement used to categorize a diamond’s weight. The larger the carat, the larger the size of the diamond. This is one of the biggest factors in determining the price of the stone.
