March Birthstone – Aquamarine

Aquamarine is a tranquil colored greenish blue to blue-green gem named after the sea and is said to bring inner peace, hope, and self-love. Aquamarine celebrates March birthdays as well as 19th wedding anniversaries.

The name aquamarine is derived from the Latin word aqua marinus, meaning “water of the sea”. Aquamarine has many historical meanings, it was believed to protect sailors and guarantee a safe voyage. It was also said that the serene color of aquamarine could cool the temper, allowing the wearer to remain calm and levelheaded. It was tradition use aquamarine as a gift to the bride at a wedding to symbolize long unity and love.

Aquamarine is mainly mined in Brazil, but also is found in Nigeria, Madagascar, Zambia, Pakistan, and Mozambique. Very large stones have been found all over the world, including one stone found in Brazil that weighed over 240 pounds. Aquamarine grows in large, six-sided crystals that can be up to a foot long, making it a great gem to be cut and polished in larger carats for statement pieces.

With all the different meanings aquamarine holds, one thing is certain. Either as a piece of jewelry or as an aid in a spiritual journey, aquamarines cool, tranquil color is the perfect complement to any skin tone or setting.
