February Birthstone – Amethyst
February 16, 2017Amethyst is a lovely violet colored quartz used in a wide variety of jewelry that celebrates February birthdays. Amethyst is said to be associated with qualities of peace, courage and stability. It’s also the stone that celebrates the 6th and 17th year of marriage.
The name amethyst derives from the Ancient Greek word that translates to intoxicated. Ancient wearers believed the gemstone could protect them from drunkenness and enabled them to keep a balanced mindset. Amethyst has been associated with many myths, legends, religions, and numerous cultures.
While amethyst is most commonly recognized to be a purple color, the stone can range from a light pinkish violet to a deep purple. One stone can sometimes have layers or color variants, making the way the gemstone is cut important to the way the color shows in a finished piece. Amethyst often occurs in geodes or in the cavities of granitic rocks. It can be found all over the world, including the United States, Canada Brazil and Zambia.
Some historical accounts say that Saint Valentine had an amethyst ring carved with an image of Cupid and it is said to strengthen relationships and give its wearer courage, making it the perfect stone to celebrate birthdays in the month of February.
